Let me also start this rejoinder with the word patriot only! Patriot is a person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors. Now let me explain the dictionary meaning of two more words- enemy and detractor- here. An enemy is a person who is actively opposed or hostile to someone or something; a hostile nation or its armed forces, especially in time of war; a thing that harms or weakens something else. A detractor is a person who disparages someone or something.
Now let us talk about Aamir Khan. First of all, I am intrigued to ask Ms. Kiran Rao, wife of Aamir Khan, why it is impossible for her to speak for herself and whether she has appointed her husband Aamir Khan as her legitimate spokesperson. I do agree with you, Mr. Brian Carvalho, the couple isn’t leaving the country and they have been called many names. We’ll come to that part later on, but let me first tell you why Aamir Khan may not be patriotic at all.
Aamir Khan’s association with Narmada Bachao Andolan was not at all an act of patriotism; so weren’t his proclamations against the then Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, without even a shred of evidence! That amounted to belittling not only the judiciary and the judicial procedure of this country, but also the very constitution of this nation itself. Conspiring against a constitutional post i.e. Chief Minister of Gujarat by waging a campaign to deny visa of the US to an elected Chief Minister of an Indian state, Gujarat, does amount to an act of treason. The kind of moral fraud he has perpetrated in the name of Satyamev Jayate, a so-called campaign for national awareness, needs no further explanation. Lastly, even as he continues to be the brand ambassador of the ‘Incredible India’ campaign, he sided with the Intolerance-brigade and ended up campaigning for ‘intolerant India’… That definitely is not patriotic at all. And now you must have understood why I went on to define two more words, viz. enemy and detractor.
Nevertheless, let me tell you in no uncertain terms that none of his deeds I mentioned in the previous paragraph was either illegal or criminal in nature! Aamir Khan is absolutely entitled to his freedom of expression and so are those who according to Aamir and you have been calling him various names! While I say that someone is absolutely entitled to his freedom of expression, it must be kept in mind that the compliance with the provision of the article 19(2) is a precondition. Now neither Aamir nor any of those who have been calling him names ever since he joined the intolerance-brigade seems to have violated the article 19(2).
So here I ask you, Mr. Brian Carvalho, to do us a little favour and be tolerant! Be tolerant towards people who have committed no crime even if you don’t like them for what they are!
You are not the only media person who has got problems with NRIs and PIOs speaking for India, Mr. Brian Carvalho! Given the way your tribe distinguishes the NRIs and PIOs who speak against India from those who speak for India, I am tempted to tag you all unpatriotic, and it is well within my right to free speech, compliant with the provision of the article 19(2), to call you unpatriotic: just like your comrades call people various names- ranging from Internet Hindus to Bhakts! Now next time- before rushing to Salman Rushdie, Prof. Amartya Sen, or even Prof. Bhagwati for that matter- do keep this in mind that people are not dumb as you perceive them to be!
On a parting note, let me frankly tell you that people do not feel disappointed or anguished when such people grandly announce that they’re contemplating to leave India, people feel truly anguished when they refuse to be true to their words and don’t act accordingly!
